Final shoot

Tuesday the 29th marks our final shoot. This is the climax of our music video; the dance routine. Here is some of our planning material for the shoot.

Here is our Shoot plan/List.

Final shoot Tuesday 29th November – Dance routine

There is an event page on facebook.

I spoke to the student who runs dance club in the girls gym and she agreed to let us use the venue tomorrow lunch. We felt an indoor venue would encourage a better turnout, due to cold weather being off putting.

Good news

Furthermore, we communicated as a group on our facebook page to ensure everything was set.

To make sure we get enough dancers, we sent an email to our teacher asking her to publicise the shoot.

Feature section of the website

One aspect of the website is a scrolling feature bar which displays the most important news which will help promote the artist. This is in addition to a news feed, however featured news would be more related to selling the 'brand' of the artist and promoting them as opposed to the updates which a news feed would supply.

A rough example of one feature article
The 4 or 5 features would slide across the screen in a slideshow like manner, replacing each other with a slow gentle fade. We've tested this on wix and there are no issues with this so with feedback from each group member and teachers we will look to include it in our final website.

These are just rough edits and templates and will probably not be used in the final version.

The idea is that a bold image to capture attention is accompanied by a lead text article with a link to read the whole article.
Images may not be of the artist, but will be related to the article.

TWITTER HYPE

Twitter
Alex and myself went to film the underground sections of our music video and it's safe to say we caused quite a stir. I'm desperatley searching the internet for more people but literally hundreds of people had their phones out filming and taking pictures of me. Above are some tweets about our escapades and we're certain there are many more.

The shoot went well and we got all the footage we needed plus a whole lot extra after getting carried away.
They even tweet picced about us

Feedback Session/Meeting with Mrs Dymioti

In the lesson me and alex had a quick meeting with Mrs Dymioti to go over the recent developments in our project and the progress we had made on the marketing campaign. The main points we discussed were:
  • The research we've done shows that we have found a niche for our artist because she will be marketed neither as a sexual object nor a tomboy. She will be just the everyday girl with extraordinary DJing talents, she's fashionable and fun.
  • In previous meetings we had considered one of the outfits for the promo shoot to be a charlie's angel look (leather jacket and trousers with heels) but the point was bought up about the idea that this could send mixed signals to the audience about who this girl is. It also may not link in with the idea of the fun loving and innocent video. She should definitely be trendy and into fashion but maybe not take the 'edge' too far.
  • Consider Little Mix from this years X Factor for inspiration because the girl next door image is starting trends for females in the industry and will be an advantage for our artist

DJ decks and artist all set

DJ decks are secured

Thanks to our friend Ethan, our DJ, Odelia is going to have some real dj decks for her shoot on Wednesday. We're so excited!

Odelia Yu is our Dj, she's pretty confident and isn't camera shy having starred in her own music and video and in our workshop last year. We feel she stands out and there is a gap in the market for her as there a few female DJ's in the charts, and few asian artists in the entire music industry. This will help her to stand out and be unique

Promo Shoot Inspirations and Ideas

To get some inspiration for the types of shots that we may want to try out during our promo shoot, I searched the internet for images that were related to DJs, music or confident women and below is what I found.

There are several categories of image that we want to capture on the shoot, these are: Action Shots, Beauty Shots and Personality Shots. The action shots involve showing the artist using the decks and looking as if they are actually laying down a track. Beauty shots will focus more on facial expressions and the headphones. The personality shots will be used to portray the loud, bright and colourful side to the artist.

Progress Update! Thursday 10th November 2011

After capturing all the footage we got from sunday's shoot and starting on a rough edit, we realised that the footage simply wasn't working with the track and there was not enough variation. So after more discussions we have adapted the idea slightly in order for it to fit to the track better and to improve the entertainment value of the video. Below is a summary of where we are at now.

We have gone back to square 1 and come up with a new narrative but have kept the element of the panda and the final dance routine. However there will now be more emphasis on a journey and include more set ups rather than have all the video occur in a park. The journey will be from the panda's home to the school field and the set ups occur for different scenarios along the way.

Possible Scenarios

  • Panda wakes up and leaves the house
  • He cycles to southgate
  • Waits for a train/bus
  • Gets on the train (lots of cuts between him in different positions to connote time passing)
  • Off the train
  • Buy breakfast in a cafe
  • Cross at a zebra crossing with a lollipop man
  • Panda steals a bike

Brief break down of the video
  • The first minute would be the journey from home to school with all the locations and scenarios along the way
  • The next minute would start from the slower part of the song and this is where people start to follow the panda on his journey in school
  • The last 46 seconds would be the flash mob dance routine

Shoot Reflections

These are some photo's from the shoot, which although cold was very enjoyable as we solideried on! On the day we had three camera's so that we had to shoot the dance sequence as few times as possible, meaning our extra's didn't have to stay out in the cold for any longer than needed!

Shots of Chris/The Panda:

Shots of extra's (rehearsing dance)

Reflections from the day:
  • We managed to get most of our shots done except for the solo shots of the panda's opening dance.
  • The weather wasn't amazing but at least it didn't rain. To make the setting look better we will use colour grading when editing to make it seem brighter and less like a cold novembers day!
  • Luckily enough extra's turned up for our shoot to work okay, and there were about 15 dancers overall.
  • Our extra's picked up the dance quite quickly, and some of them had watched the tutorial video we posted which meant shooting went faster.

Research into Female DJ's

From previous research into female DJ's we know that there are very few female DJ's who have hit the mainstream in the music industry. After researching some more I came across a few sites that have listed some of the top female DJs in their eyes, which could be useful for drawing influences from for our website, album cover and promo shots.

FEMALEDJLIST.BLOGSPOT.COM

http://femaledjlist.blogspot.com/

This website lists their top female DJs from around the world. Most of the artists have DJ before their name, which in some ways makes them sound slightly more amateur than what we want. Most of the promotional photos also feature the girls dressed provocatively, which is what we have wanted to avoid from the start.

SHEJAY.NET

http://www.shejay.net/

This website is almost like a hub for female DJs around the globe and it allows you to source them out for events you wish to host, etc. They also regularly interview different artists and post news on their activity for fans. But they have also created a separate brand out of this, using their pun on words of 'SHEJAY' to promote female power and they sell t-shirts and other merchandise to profit from this.

Analysis of DJ Shortee

Click on the image to go to the site

- Laid Back
- Almost scene crossed with street (clothing vs hair)
- Emphasis on female power
- Independent producer who owns several labels, which is linked to opening page
- Website offers no direct purchasing opportunities
- Standard interactivity links

Not featured on this website, yet the biggest female dj in the UK right now is Annie Mac. She hosts a radio show on national BBC Radio 1 and is loved by both males and females. As our target audience are both young males and females, Annie is a great inspiration to our artist planning. Like Annie, we want Absynth to be:

  • Popular
  • Mainstream, yet popular under the rader as well
  • Inspirational/role model
  • Trend setter
  • Laid back
  • Pretty and confident

Weekly Plan (31st Oct - 4th Nov)

This is a list of things we need to get done in the coming week so that we are fully prepared for our shoot and for our auxillary tasks:
  • Make sure everything is planned for our shoot on Sunday 6th - confirm actors, location, props etc.
  • Finish the dance routine for the panda - make sure our actor can perform it successfully
  • Start working on the website/Album Cover - this isn't a priority but it's something we can start thinking about and come up with ideas for
  • Book a slot for our studio shots - confirm/decide on a girl to be our artist who is willing to play a strong female character
  • Finish our rough edit from the footage we filmed in half term so that we can see which shots we want to use in our proper shoot

Artist Identity Update

After reviewing our plan for artist identity we decided to change our artist from a male duo, to a female solo DJ. We feel this idea is more original as there are far fewer female DJ's in the music industry and it would make our artist more unique allowing us to fill a gap in the market. The lack of female DJ's was recently brought up in an article by the Guardian:

This is a quote from the article:

Clicking through DJ Mag's newly published list of top 100 DJs, it's easy to spot the one thing missing: women. Revered in the clubbing industry as the "black book" for DJs, producers and promoters, the list is voted for by the public every year. Between 2007 and 2011 just one girl, Claudia Cazacu, scraped on to the list, charting at number 93 in 2010. Not even Annie Mac – who hosts three shows on Radio 1, DJs regularly at Fabric and whose Annie Mac Presents mixtape is No 1 in the electronic charts – gets a look in.

Our artist will be young, edgy and fresh and although the artist is female, she will have a strong personality and will be really confident. We were thinking about having her wear black (perhaps with gold in places).
